The needs
DUKADA Trio helps users of insulin pens who sometimes:
- forget the time of their last dose of insulin
- would like to have extra light while injecting insulin
- inject insulin while seated on an unstable seat or
- have trembling hands
DUKADA Trio is produced by Dukada ApS which is headquartered at the Science Park at the Technical University of Copenhagen. Read here about our team.
How does DUKADA Trio function?
DUKADA Trio is a handy and lightweight replacement cap for insulin pens with
- a timer,
- needle light and
- a flex grip
It consists of two parts, the Main Cap (with the electronics) and a Top Cap. Its battery is replaceable.
When DUKADA Trio is placed on the insulin pen, its Top Cap can be compared with the original pen cap.
The user removes the Top Cap from the insulin pen (with DUKADA Trio) in order to take insulin and puts it back after the injection. The timer starts counting the time of the injection when the Top Cap is remounted on the insulin pen with Dukada Trio more than 10 seconds after it was detached.
Both the Needle Light and the Flex Grip are placed on the Main Cap of DUKADA Trio. The Images on this page show how they work.
When the insulin pen is empty, the user transfers DUKADA Trio to the next insulin pen.
See the detailed user guide for more information.
DUKADA Trio presently comes in versions for the
- Novo Nordisk FlexPen for NovoRapid / NovoLog, Victoza, Levemir, NovoMix 30/50/70/ and Protaphane HM(ge), and
- Sanofi SoloStar for Lantus, Apidra and Insuman.

Why DUKADA Trio? User empowerment
The user is in charge with the DUKADA Trio replacement cap which is more than a timer.
It gives additional unique features (needle light and flex grip) helping daily management of diabetes. Its battery is replaceable.
Moreover, the product is lightweight and it does not extend the length of the insulin pen.
Users do not always forget the time passed since latest injection. That’s why the time is only shown when the user asks for time information by pressing the button on DUKADA Trio.
An additional example of the focus on user options: DUKADA Trio takes into account that the user might remove the Top Cap for 10 seconds or more without taking insulin. In that case, the user can keep the ongoing time counting by pressing the button for 1.5 seconds until one of the LED flashes before mounting the Top Cap.
The timer
The timer works with LEDs. The user presses the grey button to see the time passed since the last injection.
The number of lights indicates the time passed in hours.
Read our user guide here or check the timer video for more information.

CE registration, compliance, savings for the Health Care, price and reimbursement to users?
DUKADA Trio is registered at the Danish Health Care Authority as a Medical Device. Its CE classification is valid in all EU countries.
Compliance, adherence
We assume that focus on good management of insulin injections, in general, improves compliance (user adherence). Moreover, in the long run, it reduces the risk of complications for the users – thus also reduces the Health Care costs.
Possible savings?
The use of DUKADA Trio might give savings for the Health Care Systems. It is the case, if, for example, a person who otherwise would have needed help to carry out his or her injections of insulin can do these on his/her own with DUKADA Trio.
The Flex Grip – used to allow for two-hand control of the insulin pen – is shown here.
